Our 4 Day Tambopata & Sandoval Lake Amazon Tour is designed for travelers who want more time to discover the wildlife, landscapes and culture of the Peruvian Amazon near Puerto Maldonado.
The adventure begins with a boat journey along the Madre de Dios River and an introductory walk through the tropical rainforest. As evening approaches, we return to the river to search for caimans and experience the remarkable transition between day and night in the Amazon.
Our second day takes us to Sandoval Lake inside the Tambopata National Reserve, where we explore the lake by paddle canoe while searching for giant river otters, monkeys, caimans and tropical birds. After sunset, we experience another side of the jungle during a guided Amazon night walk.
On Day 3, we wake before sunrise to experience a parrot clay lick, where colorful parrots may gather to consume mineral-rich clay. Later, we explore a botanical trail and traditional Amazon farm to discover tropical fruits, useful plants and traditional knowledge before enjoying a respectful cultural experience with a local Amazonian family.
Our final day provides a completely different perspective of the rainforest as we explore the Amazon canopy, search for monkeys and, when conditions permit, experience kayaking on the Madre de Dios River before returning to Puerto Maldonado.

Itinerary
Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Madre De Dios River – Amazon Rainforest.
Welcome to the Peruvian Amazon
Your 4 Day Tambopata Amazon adventure begins when our Jungle Trekkers Peru team welcomes you in Puerto Maldonado.
Depending on your travel arrangements, we can meet you at the airport, bus terminal or your accommodation.
After meeting your professional Amazon guide and receiving an introduction to the journey ahead, we transfer toward the river port.
Here, we board our motorized boat and begin navigating along the Madre de Dios River, leaving the city behind as tropical vegetation gradually surrounds us.
The river is an important natural corridor for wildlife, so our Amazon experience begins immediately.
As we travel, we keep watch along the riverbanks and surrounding forest for tropical birds and any wildlife that may appear.
Upon reaching our jungle accommodation, we settle into our rooms and prepare for our first exploration of the rainforest.
Introduction to the Amazon Rainforest
Accompanied by our professional guide, we begin a gentle nature walk through the surrounding tropical forest.
This first excursion introduces us to the remarkable complexity of the Tambopata rainforest ecosystem.
Beneath the canopy, we discover enormous tropical trees, palms, vines, insects and plants traditionally used by Amazonian communities.
Our guide will explain how different plants and animals interact and teach us to recognize some of the sounds, tracks and signs that reveal the presence of wildlife.
Along the way, we search for monkeys, tropical birds, butterflies, frogs, insects and other rainforest species.
Wildlife may appear at any moment or remain completely hidden among the dense vegetation.
That uncertainty is part of exploring a truly wild environment.
After our walk, we return to enjoy lunch and some time to relax surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.
Sunset & Caiman Search
Later in the afternoon, we return toward the Madre de Dios River.
As daylight slowly disappears, the rainforest begins to change.
Daytime wildlife becomes quieter while nocturnal animals begin emerging from their shelters.
From our boat, we slowly explore sections of the riverbank while our guide searches for Amazon caimans.
Once darkness falls, their eyes can sometimes be detected reflecting the light from our flashlights near the water’s edge.
The excursion is also an opportunity to appreciate the sounds of the Amazon after sunset.
We then return to our jungle accommodation for dinner and our first night surrounded by the rainforest.
- Meals: Lunch & Dinner
- Accommodation: Jungle Accommodation.
Day 2: Sandoval Lake – Giant River Otters – Amazon Night Walk.
Journey into Tambopata National Reserve
After breakfast, we prepare for one of the most important wildlife experiences of our adventure: Sandoval Lake.
We travel by boat along the Madre de Dios River toward the access point of the Tambopata National Reserve.
From here, we begin walking through the tropical rainforest toward the lake.
The trail itself provides another opportunity for wildlife observation.
Our guide helps us search the forest canopy and surrounding vegetation for monkeys, tropical birds, butterflies, insects and other species while explaining the ecology of this protected environment.
Eventually, the forest opens and the peaceful waters of Sandoval Lake appear before us.
Exploring Sandoval Lake by Paddle Canoe
We board a traditional paddle canoe and quietly begin exploring the lake.
Traveling without a motor allows us to move slowly through this sensitive environment while minimizing noise and disturbance to wildlife.
Sandoval Lake is surrounded by palms, flooded forest and dense tropical vegetation, creating an exceptional habitat for numerous Amazon species.
We explore the shoreline and surrounding forest while searching for red howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys, hoatzins, kingfishers, herons, parrots and caimans.
With some luck, we may also encounter one of the most iconic mammals of the Peruvian Amazon.
Searching for Giant River Otters
The giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) is one of the most fascinating wildlife species associated with Sandoval Lake.
These highly social animals can live in family groups and communicate using a remarkable variety of sounds.
With patience and favorable conditions, we may observe them swimming, fishing or interacting with members of their family group.
However, giant river otter sightings can never be guaranteed.
These animals live completely wild and move freely throughout their natural environment.
Their presence depends on water levels, weather, food availability and their own natural behavior.
Our guides will always make every reasonable effort to locate wildlife while maintaining an appropriate distance and avoiding unnecessary disturbance.
Wildlife Around Sandoval Lake
Throughout our exploration, we continue searching for the many other animals that depend on the lake and surrounding forest.
Depending on natural wildlife activity, there may also be opportunities to encounter capybaras, monkeys, reptiles and numerous tropical bird species.
Our guide will help identify the wildlife we encounter while explaining the ecological importance of oxbow lakes such as Sandoval within the Amazon rainforest.
After our exploration, we leave the lake and begin our journey back toward our accommodation.
Amazon Night Walk
After dinner, we enter the forest once again but this time after darkness has completely transformed it.
With flashlights in hand, we slowly explore the trails during a guided Amazon night walk.
The rainforest after sunset belongs to an entirely different community of animals.
We search for tree frogs, insects, spiders, nocturnal birds and other creatures that are rarely encountered during daylight hours.
Our guide will explain some of the remarkable adaptations these species use to survive, communicate and hunt in darkness.
After our night exploration, we return to our accommodation for a well-earned rest.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Accommodation: Jungle Accommodation.
Day 3: Parrot Clay Lick – Amazon Botanical Trail – Local Farm & Cultural Experience.
Sunrise at the Parrot Clay Lick
Today begins before sunrise.
We wake early and travel toward a parrot clay lick, locally known as a collpa.
These naturally exposed mineral-rich areas can attract parrots and other birds during the early morning hours.
When conditions are favorable, colorful groups of parrots gather in the surrounding trees before descending toward the clay.
Watching the forest gradually awaken while listening to parrots calling from the canopy can be one of the most memorable birdwatching experiences of our Tambopata adventure.
Our guide will explain the current scientific understanding of this fascinating behavior and why clay licks are important gathering places for some Amazon bird species.
As with every wildlife experience in the Amazon, the number and species of birds present can vary significantly from one day to another.
Amazon Botanical Trail & Traditional Farm
After our early-morning wildlife experience, we continue our exploration along a botanical trail toward a traditional Amazon farm, commonly known locally as a chakra.
This experience allows us to discover another side of the rainforest: how people have learned to cultivate food and use tropical plants while living within the Amazon environment.
Depending on the season, we may encounter different Amazon fruits, cacao, bananas, plantains and other local crops.
Our guide will explain how some plants are used for food while others have traditionally been valued for medicinal or practical purposes.
Rather than simply identifying plants, this excursion helps us understand the relationship between Amazon biodiversity, traditional knowledge and everyday life in the rainforest.
Afterward, we return for lunch and some time to relax.
Amazon Cultural Experience
In the afternoon, we continue discovering the human side of the Amazon through a respectful cultural experience with a local family.
This encounter provides an opportunity to learn about traditional skills, knowledge and ways of life that have developed over generations in the rainforest.
Depending on the family and activities available, we may learn about traditional plant fibers, weaving, bows and arrows, natural materials and traditional methods of making fire.
Our goal is not to present Amazon culture as a performance.
Instead, Jungle Trekkers Peru aims to create a respectful opportunity for cultural exchange where visitors can learn directly from local people and better understand their relationship with the surrounding forest.
After our experience, we return to our jungle accommodation for dinner.
The evening is yours to relax, listen to the rainforest and enjoy our final night surrounded by the Amazon.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Accommodation: Jungle Accommodation.
Day 4: Amazon Canopy – Monkeys – Kayak – Puerto Maldonado.
Exploring the Amazon Canopy
After breakfast, our final day provides a completely different perspective of the rainforest.
Until now, much of our exploration has taken place on forest trails, rivers and lakes.
Today, we look upward.
We visit a rainforest canopy observation area, where elevated platforms allow us to appreciate the enormous scale of the Amazon forest.
From above the forest floor, we search the surrounding treetops for wildlife.
The canopy is home to an extraordinary diversity of species and can provide opportunities to observe toucans, parrots, macaws and other tropical birds.
Depending on the location and operating conditions, travelers may also have the opportunity to participate in a zipline experience through the forest canopy.
Before beginning, safety procedures and equipment will be explained by the instructor.
Searching for Amazon Monkeys
Later, we continue along the Madre de Dios River toward an area known for monkey activity.
Here we search for some of the primates that inhabit the forests surrounding Puerto Maldonado.
Species that may be encountered include squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys and tamarins, although their presence and location vary naturally.
Observing monkeys moving freely through the trees gives us another opportunity to appreciate the importance of the rainforest canopy as a habitat and feeding environment.
As with all of our wildlife encounters, animals are observed respectfully and from an appropriate distance.
Kayaking on the Madre de Dios River
When weather, water levels and safety conditions permit, we can also experience a section of the Madre de Dios River by kayak.
Moving close to the water provides a completely different perspective of the surrounding rainforest and allows us to enjoy the landscape at a slower pace.
Our guide will always determine whether river conditions are appropriate.
During periods of strong currents, high water or adverse weather, kayaking may be modified or suspended for safety.
Return to Puerto Maldonado
After completing our final activities and enjoying lunch, we board our motorized boat and begin our return journey toward Puerto Maldonado.
This final river journey provides one last opportunity to watch the forested riverbanks for wildlife and enjoy the landscape that has surrounded us during the previous four days.
Upon arrival, Jungle Trekkers Peru will assist with your transfer according to your onward travel arrangements.

IMPORTANT: THE AMAZON IS WILD AND UNPREDICTABLE
One of the most important things to understand before traveling to Tambopata and Sandoval Lake is that the Amazon is a completely natural, wild and constantly changing environment.
The Amazon is unpredictable, and that is part of what makes every journey unique.
This is not a zoo or a controlled wildlife park. Every animal we search for lives freely within an enormous rainforest ecosystem.
Although Sandoval Lake, the Madre de Dios River and the Tambopata rainforest provide habitat for giant river otters, monkeys, capybaras, caimans, parrots, macaws, toucans and countless other species, specific wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.
Weather, rainfall, river and lake levels, food availability, season and the natural movements of animals all influence what we may encounter.
This is especially important for experiences such as the parrot clay lick. On some mornings, bird activity may be spectacular; on others, fewer birds may appear or they may remain in the surrounding trees.
The same applies to giant river otters, monkeys, caimans and every other wild species we search for.
Our experienced Amazon guides understand the habitats, sounds, tracks and behavior of local wildlife and will always make every reasonable effort to provide the best possible opportunities for observation.
However, Jungle Trekkers Peru practices responsible wildlife tourism.
We do not chase, feed or unnecessarily disturb wildlife simply to guarantee a photograph or sighting. Animals are always observed respectfully and on their own terms.
The rainforest itself can also change our plans.
Tropical rain, heat, humidity, muddy trails, changing river levels and sudden weather conditions are normal parts of an Amazon expedition.
For safety, weather, river conditions or wildlife activity, our guide may occasionally adjust the timing, order or duration of activities. Kayaking, canopy activities and other excursions may also be modified or suspended when conditions are considered unsafe.
These changes are not failures of the itinerary.
They are part of exploring a living rainforest where nature ultimately determines the rhythm of each day.
Sometimes the unexpected moments monkeys suddenly crossing the canopy, parrots filling the morning sky, a caiman appearing beside the river or giant otters emerging across a quiet lake become the most memorable experiences of the entire journey.
When you explore Tambopata with Jungle Trekkers Peru, you enter the Amazon on nature’s terms.
That unpredictability is part of the adventure and part of what makes experiencing the real Peruvian Amazon so extraordinary.
