Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Paucartambo – Manu Cloud Forest – Pilcopata.
From the High Andes to the Amazon Rainforest
Your 3-Day Manu Amazon Jungle Tour from Cusco begins early in the morning with pick-up from your hotel.
Leaving Cusco behind, we travel through the eastern Andes, passing traditional communities, agricultural valleys, and beautiful mountain landscapes as we make our way toward the Amazon Basin.
Our first important stop will be Paucartambo, a picturesque colonial town surrounded by mountains and historically considered one of the gateways connecting the Andes with the Amazon.
We will have time to discover part of the town’s history and admire its traditional architecture before continuing toward the Manu region.
As our vehicle climbs higher into the Andes, we eventually reach Acjanaco, located at approximately 3,500 meters (11,480 ft) above sea level.
Here, one of the most spectacular transformations of our journey begins.
We gradually leave the high Andean environment behind and start descending along the humid eastern slopes of the Andes into the extraordinary Manu Cloud Forest.
Searching for the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock
The cloud forest is one of the most fascinating ecosystems encountered during any Manu Cultural Zone Tour.
Mist-covered mountains, giant ferns, mosses, bromeliads, orchids, and dense vegetation provide habitat for an extraordinary diversity of birds and mammals.
We will make several stops during our descent to explore the forest and search for wildlife with our professional guide.
One of the special experiences of our journey will be enjoying lunch in a beautiful hummingbird garden surrounded by the lush vegetation of the Manu Cloud Forest. Rather than simply stopping for a meal, this will be another opportunity to connect with the incredible biodiversity that makes Manu so unique.
While our professional cook prepares the table and serves a freshly made lunch, we will have time to relax and observe the garden around us. Different species of hummingbirds frequently visit the flowers and feeders, sometimes flying remarkably close as they move rapidly from one feeding spot to another.
This is also a wonderful opportunity for birdwatching and photography. With a little patience, we can appreciate the remarkable variety of colors, sizes and behaviors of these tiny birds while our guide helps us identify some of the species found in this part of the Manu region.
Surrounded by the sounds of the forest, colorful flowers and hummingbirds flashing through the vegetation, lunch becomes much more than a meal. It is a peaceful moment to slow down, enjoy the scenery and experience the wildlife of Manu from a completely different perspective.
Also one of our main targets is the spectacular Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruvianus), Peru’s national bird.
In certain areas of the forest, males gather at traditional courtship sites known as leks. These are special areas where several males come together to compete for the attention of females, performing distinctive displays, movements, and loud vocalizations. The females observe the different males and then choose a mate. With their brilliant red-orange plumage and fascinating courtship behavior, male Andean Cock-of-the-Rocks are among the most impressive and iconic birds of the Manu Cloud Forest.
Depending on natural conditions and a little luck, we may also spot toucans, quetzals, trogons, tanagers, hummingbirds, and different species of monkeys.
Our guide will also explain how the cloud forest functions as an extraordinary biological bridge between the Andes and the Amazon.
As we continue descending, temperatures become warmer and tropical vegetation increasingly dominates the landscape.
By late afternoon, we arrive in the Pilcopata area, located in the Amazon foothills.
After settling into our jungle lodge, you can relax surrounded by tropical vegetation and listen as the sounds of the rainforest begin to change with the arrival of night.
We enjoy dinner before resting and preparing for the following day’s Amazon adventure.
- Accommodation: Jungle Lodge in the Pilcopata área
- Meals: Lunch & Dinner
- Main Experiences: Paucartambo • Andes-to-Amazon Journey • Manu Cloud Forest • Andean Cock of the Rock • Wildlife Watching • Birdwatching.
Day 2: Pilcopata – Atalaya – Alto Madre De Dios River – Machuwasi Lake.
Exploring the Tropical Rainforest of the Manu Cultural Zone
We wake up surrounded by the sounds of tropical birds and the Amazon rainforest.
After breakfast, our Manu jungle adventure continues toward the tropical lowlands.
During our journey from Pilcopata toward Atalaya, we remain alert for opportunities to observe wildlife along the road and surrounding forest.
This transition zone between the Andean foothills and Amazon lowlands is particularly interesting because species from different elevations can overlap, creating excellent opportunities for wildlife photography and birdwatching in Manu.
Eventually, we arrive at Atalaya, a small Amazonian river port located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River.
Here, we leave our road transportation behind and begin a completely different part of our adventure.
Exploring the Alto Madre de Dios River by Boat
We board our motorized boat and begin navigating along the Alto Madre de Dios River, surrounded by tropical rainforest.
Traveling by river allows us to experience the Amazon from an entirely different perspective.
Dense forest rises along both banks while sandbanks, river islands, and riverside vegetation provide different habitats for wildlife.
During navigation, we keep watch for herons, kingfishers, parrots, monkeys, and other Amazon wildlife that may appear along the riverbanks or high in the forest canopy.
The animals of Manu live completely wild and free, so every journey is different and every wildlife encounter is special.
After arriving at our jungle lodge, we settle into our rooms and enjoy lunch surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.
Later, we prepare for one of the day’s most interesting excursions.
Machuwasi Lake – Exploring an Amazon Wetland
In the afternoon, we visit Machuwasi Lake, a beautiful wetland ecosystem surrounded by tropical vegetation.
Using traditional wooden rafts, we quietly explore the lake while searching for wildlife along its edges.
One of the characteristic birds of this habitat is the extraordinary Hoatzin, an unusual Amazonian bird with a prehistoric appearance.
The wetlands surrounding Machuwasi also provide habitat for numerous species of waterbirds.
Depending on conditions and luck, we may also encounter monkeys, capybaras, caimans, and a variety of tropical birds around the lake and surrounding forest.
The peaceful pace of our raft excursion allows us to appreciate another side of the incredible biodiversity of the Manu Cultural Zone.
Amazon Rainforest Night Walk
Our exploration does not end when the sun disappears.
After darkness falls, we venture into the forest accompanied by our guide for an exciting Amazon rainforest night walk.
The jungle changes completely after sunset.
Using flashlights, we carefully explore the trails and surrounding vegetation in search of tree frogs, insects, spiders, and other nocturnal rainforest creatures.
Our guide will explain how these species have adapted to life in darkness and why nighttime is one of the most fascinating periods for exploring the Amazon ecosystem.
After our night adventure, we return to the lodge for dinner.
The rest of the evening is yours to relax while enjoying the extraordinary natural soundtrack of the Peruvian Amazon rainforest.
- Accommodation: Amazon Jungle Lodge
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Main Experiences: Atalaya • Alto Madre de Dios River • Amazon Boat Journey • Machuwasi Lake • Hoatzins • Wildlife Watching • Amazon Night Walk.
Day 3: Parrot Clay Lick – Atalaya – Manu Cloud Forest – Cusco.
Sunrise Wildlife Experience in the Amazon
Our final day begins before sunrise.
Early morning is one of the most fascinating times to experience the Amazon rainforest because birds and other wildlife become increasingly active as daylight reaches the forest.
We travel to a natural parrot clay lick, locally known as a collpa, where we have the opportunity to observe one of the Amazon’s most interesting natural behaviors.
Parrot Clay Lick Experience
As the rainforest awakens, different species of parrots and parakeets may begin arriving from different areas of the forest.
The birds often gather first in nearby trees, filling the morning with their calls before approaching the mineral rich clay.
Depending on the season, weather, and natural conditions, different species of parrots, parakeets, and occasionally macaws may visit the area.
Our guide will explain the fascinating behavior associated with Amazon clay licks and the different scientific theories regarding why parrots and other birds consume mineral-rich clay.
This is an entirely natural wildlife experience.
There are no trained animals, cages, or artificial feeding stations. The birds are wild and move freely throughout the rainforest, meaning that both the species and number of individuals observed can vary from day to day.
This unpredictability is precisely what makes a genuine Manu wildlife experience so special.
After enjoying the clay lick and the early morning atmosphere of the Amazon, we return for breakfast and prepare for our journey back toward the Andes.
From the Amazon Rainforest Back to Cusco
We navigate the river once again toward Atalaya, where our private transportation will be waiting.
From here, we begin our overland journey back to Cusco.
This final journey allows us to appreciate once again one of Manu’s most remarkable characteristics: its enormous altitudinal and ecological diversity.
Within a relatively short geographical distance, we travel from the tropical Amazon rainforest through mist-covered cloud forest and eventually return to the high Andes.
After three days exploring one of Peru’s most biodiverse regions, we arrive back in Cusco in the late afternoon or evening, depending on weather and road conditions, marking the end of our 3-Day Manu Cultural Zone Tour with Jungle Trekkers Peru.
- Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
- Main Experiences: Parrot Clay Lick • Amazon Birds • Rainforest Sunrise • Alto Madre de Dios River • Manu Cloud Forest • Return to Cusco.
