Overview
Five Days to Discover the Extraordinary Biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon
Our 5-Day Manu Cultural Zone Tour is designed for travelers who want to venture deeper into the Amazon rainforest, dedicate more time to wildlife and birdwatching, and experience the extraordinary natural transition between the Andes, the Manu Cloud Forest, and the Peruvian Amazon.
Starting from Cusco, over five days we travel through some of the most diverse landscapes of southeastern Peru. We cross the Andes and the spectacular Manu Cloud Forest, navigate the Alto Madre de Dios River, and explore rainforest trails, lakes, and different habitats within the Manu Cultural Zone.
Unlike our shorter Manu tours, this expedition gives us more time inside the rainforest and allows us to explore at different times of the day and night. We will have opportunities to search for monkeys, parrots, macaws, toucans, hoatzins, hummingbirds, caimans, reptiles, amphibians, and an extraordinary diversity of Amazon birds.
One of the most special experiences of this adventure is our visit to a natural mammal clay lick, where we have the possibility of observing the Amazonian tapir and other animals that occasionally visit these natural areas to consume mineral-rich soil.
We will also explore Machuwasi Lake, enjoy daytime and nighttime rainforest walks, and learn about medicinal plants, tropical trees, insects, and the complex ecological relationships that make Manu one of Peru’s most fascinating natural regions.
With Jungle Trekkers Peru, exploring the Amazon is not simply about traveling through the rainforest. It is about taking the time to listen, observe, and understand it.
Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Ninamarca – Paucartambo – Manu Cloud Forest – Pilcopata.
From the Andes to the Amazon
Our adventure begins early in the morning with pick-up from your accommodation in Cusco.
We travel in our tourist transportation toward the eastern side of the Andes, crossing inter-Andean valleys, small communities, and landscapes that gradually transform as we approach the Amazon Basin.
Our first visit will be to the Ninamarca Chullpas, a group of ancient pre-Inca funerary structures. Our guide will briefly explain the historical and cultural importance of this archaeological site before we continue our journey.
Paucartambo – Between the Andes and the Amazon
We continue toward Paucartambo, a picturesque colonial town that historically connected the Andean highlands with the Amazon territories.
We make a short visit to discover some of its history, architecture, and traditions before ascending toward Acjanaco, one of the main gateways to the Manu region.
From the heights of the Andes, we begin a spectacular descent into the Manu Cloud Forest.
The landscape changes rapidly.
The mountains become covered in mist and the vegetation grows increasingly lush. Giant ferns, mosses, bromeliads, orchids, and trees covered with epiphytes begin to dominate the landscape.
Searching for the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock
During our descent, we make several stops to observe birds and search for wildlife.
One of the special experiences of our journey will be enjoying lunch in a beautiful hummingbird garden surrounded by the lush vegetation of the Manu Cloud Forest. Rather than simply stopping for a meal, this will be another opportunity to connect with the incredible biodiversity that makes Manu so unique.
While our professional cook prepares the table and serves a freshly made lunch, we will have time to relax and observe the garden around us. Different species of hummingbirds frequently visit the flowers and feeders, sometimes flying remarkably close as they move rapidly from one feeding spot to another.
This is also a wonderful opportunity for birdwatching and photography. With a little patience, we can appreciate the remarkable variety of colors, sizes and behaviors of these tiny birds while our guide helps us identify some of the species found in this part of the Manu region.
Surrounded by the sounds of the forest, colorful flowers and hummingbirds flashing through the vegetation, lunch becomes much more than a meal. It is a peaceful moment to slow down, enjoy the scenery and experience the wildlife of Manu from a completely different perspective.
Also one of our main targets is the spectacular Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruvianus), Peru’s national bird and one of the most representative species of the Manu Cloud Forest.
In certain areas of the forest, males gather at traditional courtship sites known as leks. Here, several males compete for the attention of females through colorful displays, movements, and loud vocalizations.
Depending on natural conditions, we may also observe quetzals, trogons, toucans, tanagers, hummingbirds, monkeys, and numerous species of cloud forest birds.
In the afternoon, we arrive in the Pilcopata area, where the slopes of the Andes gradually give way to the lush Amazon rainforest.
We settle into our lodge, enjoy dinner, and spend our first night surrounded by the sounds of nature.
- Accommodation: Jungle Lodge in Pilcopata
- Meals: Lunch & Dinner
- Main Experiences: Ninamarca • Paucartambo • Andes • Manu Cloud Forest • Andean Cock-of-the-Rock • Birdwatching • Wildlife Watching.
Day 2: Pilcopata – Atalaya – Alto Madre De Dios River – Machuwasi Lake.
Entering the Tropical Rainforest of Manu
Our second day begins with the sounds of tropical birds and the natural surroundings of our jungle lodge.
After breakfast, we may explore the surroundings of Pilcopata, searching for birds, monkeys, and other wildlife inhabiting this fascinating transition zone between the cloud forest and the Amazon lowlands.
We then continue toward Atalaya, located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River.
From this point, the way we explore Manu changes completely.
We leave our road transportation behind and board a motorized boat to begin navigating one of the great natural corridors of the Peruvian Amazon.
Navigating the Alto Madre de Dios River
As we travel along the river, we scan the riverbanks, beaches, trees, and sky for wildlife.
We may encounter herons, kingfishers, cormorants, parrots, birds of prey, and other tropical birds, while our guide remains alert for movement in the vegetation that could reveal monkeys or other mammals.
In Manu, every river journey is different, and we never know exactly what may appear around the next bend.
We arrive at our Amazon jungle lodge, settle into our rooms, and enjoy lunch.
Machuwasi Lake
In the afternoon, we visit Machuwasi Lake, one of the most fascinating wetland ecosystems in the Manu Cultural Zone.
We quietly explore the lake using traditional wooden rafts.
This ecosystem provides excellent opportunities to search for the extraordinary Hoatzin, one of the most characteristic birds of Amazon wetlands.
We may also observe different species of waterbirds and, depending on natural conditions, monkeys, capybaras, reptiles, and other wildlife.
The peaceful atmosphere of the lake allows us to experience the Amazon rainforest from an entirely different perspective.
After our exploration, we return to the lodge for dinner.
- Accommodation: Amazon Jungle Lodge
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Main Experiences: Pilcopata • Atalaya • Alto Madre de Dios River • Amazon River Journey • Machuwasi Lake • Hoatzins • Monkeys • Birdwatching.
Day 3: Rainforest Exploration – Wildlife – Mammal Clay Lick – Amazonian Tapir.
Venturing Deeper into the Rainforest
We begin early to take advantage of the first hours of the day, when many bird and mammal species are particularly active.
After a hot drink and depending on forest conditions, we begin exploring different Amazon rainforest trails.
Our guide will help us recognize calls, tracks, footprints, and movements among the vegetation.
We search for different species of monkeys, toucans, parrots, macaws, trogons, tanagers, reptiles, amphibians, and other inhabitants of the rainforest.
But exploring Manu means much more than simply searching for animals.
During our walks, we learn about tropical trees, medicinal plants, insects, fruits, seeds, and the ecological relationships connecting the many different species of the Amazon rainforest.
We return to the lodge for lunch and some rest before beginning one of the most special experiences of our 5-Day Manu Cultural Zone Tour.
Journey to the Mammal Clay Lick
In the afternoon, we prepare our equipment and begin our walk toward a natural mammal clay lick, located in a more isolated area of the rainforest.
The journey itself provides another opportunity to search for wildlife and birds.
Clay licks are natural areas where certain animals visit the ground to consume mineral-rich soil.
Among the most anticipated visitors is the Amazonian tapir, one of the largest terrestrial mammals in South America.
Waiting for the Amazonian Tapir
We settle into an observation platform or hide designed to allow us to remain discreet while watching the clay lick.
As darkness falls, the sounds of the rainforest change completely.
From our observation point, we remain alert for the possible arrival of tapirs and other nocturnal mammals.
Wildlife observation always depends on natural conditions, so sightings can never be guaranteed. This uncertainty is part of the experience of exploring a completely wild ecosystem.
Tonight, we sleep in our observation shelter in the middle of the rainforest, surrounded by the sounds of the Amazon.
- Accommodation: Rainforest Observation Platform / Shelter
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Main Experiences: Amazon Trails • Monkeys • Tropical Birds • Amazon Flora • Mammal Clay Lick • Amazonian Tapir • Nocturnal Wildlife Observation.
Day 4: Mammal Clay Lick – Amazon Exploration – Alto Madre De Dios River – Pilcopata.
Waking Up in the Heart of the Amazon
Waking up deep inside the rainforest is an entirely different experience.
The first calls of the birds announce the beginning of a new day as the forest gradually becomes active again.
After our experience at the mammal clay lick, we begin walking back toward the lodge, remaining alert for any opportunities to observe wildlife along the way.
After breakfast, we have time to rest and enjoy our surroundings before continuing with the day’s activities.
Depending on forest conditions and animal activity, we may enjoy an additional walk along nearby rainforest trails.
One Last Exploration of the Amazon Lowlands
This additional time inside the Amazon is one of the great advantages of our five-day program.
Instead of rushing back, we can dedicate more time to searching for birds, observing monkeys, photographing nature, and discovering the small details of the rainforest that can easily be missed on shorter itineraries.
After lunch, we begin navigating back along the Alto Madre de Dios River.
During the journey, we continue watching the riverbanks and forest canopy for birds and mammals.
Upon reaching Atalaya, our transportation will be waiting to continue toward the Pilcopata area, where we spend our final night.
After dinner, depending on our arrival time and weather conditions, we may enjoy a short Amazon rainforest night walk around the lodge.
Using flashlights, we search for frogs, insects, spiders, small reptiles, and other nocturnal creatures that become active after darkness falls.
- Accommodation: Jungle Lodge in Pilcopata
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
- Main Experiences: Amazon Sunrise • Rainforest Trails • Wildlife Watching • Alto Madre de Dios River • Atalaya • Pilcopata • Night Walk.
Day 5: Pilcopata – Manu Cloud Forest – Paucartambo – Cusco.
Our Final Sunrise in Manu
Our final day begins once again with the sounds of nature.
After breakfast, we prepare our luggage and begin the journey back toward Cusco.
As we ascend, we travel once again through the extraordinary Manu Cloud Forest.
This time, we experience the journey in reverse, moving from the warm and humid tropical lowlands toward mist-covered mountains and eventually back into the landscapes of the high Andes.
Our guide will continue watching for opportunities to observe birds and wildlife during the journey.
We make the necessary stops along the route and enjoy lunch during our return trip.
From the Amazon Back to the Andes
This final journey allows us to appreciate once again one of Manu’s most remarkable characteristics: its enormous altitudinal and ecological diversity.
Within a relatively short geographical distance, we can travel from tropical Amazon rainforest through cloud forest and finally return to the high Andes.
We continue through Paucartambo before arriving back in Cusco in the afternoon or evening, depending on weather and road conditions.
After five days exploring one of Peru’s most biodiverse regions, our 5-Day Manu Cultural Zone Tour with Jungle Trekkers Peru comes to an end, leaving us not only with photographs but also with a much deeper understanding of the extraordinary nature of the Peruvian Amazon.
- Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
- Main Experiences: Pilcopata • Manu Cloud Forest • Birdwatching • Andes • Paucartambo • Return to Cusco.

JUNGLE TREKKERS PERU RECOMMENDATION
For Amazon rainforest excursions, we recommend comfortable, lightweight, and quick-drying clothing. Long-sleeved shirts and long pants provide better protection against mosquitoes, other insects, vegetation, and sun exposure.
For our 5-Day Manu Cultural Zone Tour, we also recommend traveling light while bringing enough changes of clothing for your time in the Amazon. Because of the high humidity, clothing may take longer to dry.
It is particularly useful to bring one or two additional changes of clothes and keep documents, cameras, phones, batteries, and other important belongings protected inside waterproof bags or dry bags.
Remember that Manu is a completely natural ecosystem. Our Jungle Trekkers Peru guides use their experience to search for wildlife in the best possible locations and at the most appropriate times, but sightings of wild animals can never be guaranteed. Every day in the Amazon is different, and this unpredictability is part of the authentic experience of exploring the rainforest with Jungle Trekkers Peru.
