Overview

Our Manu Reserved Zone & Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick Amazon Adventure – 6 Days combines two remarkable wildlife experiences in one expedition: exploring the pristine rainforest of the Manu Reserved Zone and witnessing the spectacular morning activity at the Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick.

The journey begins in Cusco and follows one of Peru’s most dramatic ecological transitions. We travel from the high Andes into the lush Manu Cloud Forest, descend toward the Amazon foothills and continue by motorized boat into the lowland rainforest.

Inside the Manu Reserved Zone, wildlife becomes the central focus of our expedition. We navigate the legendary Manu River, explore important oxbow lake ecosystems such as Cocha Otorongo and Cocha Salvador, walk through primary rainforest and search for giant river otters, monkeys, caimans, capybaras, macaws, parrots and countless other Amazon species.

Our river journeys are much more than transportation. They become moving Amazon wildlife safaris, allowing us to scan beaches, forest edges and riverbanks for animals. With extraordinary luck, this remote environment may even reveal one of its most elusive inhabitants: the jaguar.

The final stage of the adventure takes us toward the Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick, where early in the morning parrots, parakeets and colorful macaws gather around a natural clay wall. This extraordinary wildlife spectacle provides one of the most memorable birdwatching experiences in the Peruvian Amazon.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Ninamarca – Paucartambo – Manu Cloud Forest.

From the High Andes into the Cloud Forest

Our 6-day Manu Reserved Zone and Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick expedition begins early in the morning with pick-up from your accommodation in Cusco.

Leaving the ancient Inca capital behind, we travel through beautiful Andean valleys and mountain landscapes toward the eastern slopes of the Andes.

Our first cultural stop is at the pre-Inca funerary towers of Ninamarca, where our guide introduces us to some of the ancient civilizations that inhabited this region before the expansion of the Inca Empire.

We then continue toward Paucartambo, a picturesque colonial town surrounded by mountains and known for its traditional architecture, narrow streets and historic bridge.

From Paucartambo, we climb toward Acjanaco, the gateway to Manu and one of the highest points of our journey.

From here, one of the most dramatic ecological transformations of our entire Amazon expedition begins.

We descend into the extraordinary Manu Cloud Forest.

Dry mountain landscapes gradually disappear beneath dense vegetation. Giant ferns, orchids, bromeliads, moss-covered trees and forest-covered mountains surround us as moisture from the Amazon meets the eastern slopes of the Andes.

Rather than simply driving through this remarkable ecosystem, we make strategic stops and short walks while our naturalist guide introduces us to the extraordinary biodiversity of Manu.

Hummingbird Garden Lunch – Birdwatching in the Manu Cloud Forest

Before continuing our journey in search of the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, we enjoy one of the special experiences of our first day: lunch in a beautiful hummingbird garden surrounded by the vegetation of the Manu Cloud Forest.

While our professional cook prepares and serves a freshly made lunch, we have time to relax and observe the garden.

Different species of hummingbirds frequently visit the flowers and feeders, sometimes flying remarkably close as they move rapidly between feeding areas.

This peaceful setting provides an excellent opportunity for Manu birdwatching and wildlife photography while our naturalist guide helps identify some of the species found in this ecosystem.

After lunch, we continue deeper into the Cloud Forest.

One of our main objectives this afternoon is searching for the spectacular Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird.

If conditions and natural activity are favorable, we may observe colorful males displaying among the vegetation.

We also keep watch for tanagers, toucans, quetzals, trogons, monkeys and other Cloud Forest wildlife.

Eventually, we arrive at our accommodation surrounded by the lush vegetation of Manu.

After dinner, our guide introduces us to the expedition ahead and the different Amazon ecosystems we will explore during the following days.

  • Accommodation: Cloud Forest Lodge
  • Meals: Lunch & Dinner.

Day 2: Manu Cloud Forest – Atalaya – Alto Madre De Dios River – Amazon Rainforest.

Following the Rivers into the Amazon

We wake surrounded by the sounds of the Manu Cloud Forest.

After breakfast, we continue descending toward the warmer Amazon foothills.

As we lose altitude, the landscape gradually changes. Misty mountain forest gives way to increasingly tropical vegetation, while different species of birds, butterflies and other wildlife begin appearing around us.

Eventually, we reach Atalaya Port.

Here, the road ends.

And our Amazon river journey begins.

We board our motorized Amazon boat and start navigating the Alto Madre de Dios River surrounded by increasingly dense tropical rainforest.

From this moment onward, every river journey becomes part of our wildlife experience.

Our naturalist guide continuously scans the riverbanks, beaches and canopy. Parrots and macaws may cross overhead, kingfishers patrol the river, herons stand along the banks and monkeys may appear in riverside trees.

The boat provides an excellent platform for observing the rainforest without disturbing the wildlife.

As we continue deeper into the Amazon, we begin to understand how important the rivers are to life in Manu. They are transportation corridors for us, but also essential habitats for countless species.

Later, we arrive at our accommodation in the Amazon rainforest.

After sunset, those who wish may join our guide for an Amazon night walk.

The rainforest changes completely after dark. Tree frogs begin calling, insects emerge from hiding and nocturnal creatures replace many of the animals active during daylight.

  • Accommodation: Amazon Jungle Lodge
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 3: Manu Reserved Zone – Manu River – Cocha Otorongo.

Entering the Heart of Manu

Today we continue deeper into one of the most protected areas of the Peruvian Amazon.

After breakfast, our boat journey takes us toward the entrance of the Manu Reserved Zone.

Once the required control procedures have been completed, we enter one of the wildest and most biologically important sections of Manu National Park.

Human presence decreases dramatically.

The forest seems endless.

From this point, we navigate the legendary Manu River, one of the great wildlife corridors of the Peruvian Amazon.

Our boat becomes a moving observation platform.

We carefully scan beaches, forest edges and riverbanks for white and black caimans, turtles, capybaras, monkeys, herons, kingfishers, parrots and macaws.

Searching for the Jaguar

The Manu River is also one of the environments where exceptionally fortunate travelers may encounter one of the Amazon’s most elusive predators.

Jaguars occasionally use exposed beaches and riverbanks along the Manu River.

Our naturalist guide and experienced boat crew carefully scan these areas while we navigate.

A sighting can never be predicted or guaranteed.

Sometimes the rainforest reveals footprints.

Sometimes we hear alarm calls from monkeys.

And occasionally, with extraordinary luck, the animal itself appears.

Later, we reach the area of Cocha Otorongo, one of Manu’s beautiful oxbow lake environments.

We explore the lake area and surrounding rainforest while searching for monkeys, caimans, tropical birds and other Amazon wildlife.

Our journey then continues toward our accommodation inside the Manu Reserved Zone.

After dinner, we rest surrounded by the sounds of one of Peru’s wildest forests.

  • Accommodation: Reserved Zone Lodge
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 4: Cocha Salvador – Giant River Otters – Primary Rainforest – Manu Reserved Zone.

A Full Day with the Wildlife of Manu

Today is dedicated almost entirely to wildlife.

We wake early and travel toward Cocha Salvador, one of the most important oxbow lakes inside the Manu Reserved Zone.

The calm waters and surrounding primary rainforest create extraordinary habitat for birds, reptiles, monkeys and aquatic mammals.

We explore the lake quietly using the designated observation system.

Our main objective is searching for one of Manu’s most charismatic animals:

The Giant River Otter

These highly social predators live in family groups and communicate through an extraordinary range of vocalizations.

Sometimes we hear them before we see them.

A call crosses the lake.

The water moves.

And suddenly, an otter may surface.

Around us, hoatzins, herons, kingfishers, cormorants and other aquatic birds occupy the lake margins, while monkeys may move through the canopy.

Macaws and parrots may also appear overhead, their calls often announcing their presence long before we see them.

After exploring the lake, we enter the surrounding primary Amazon rainforest on foot.

Learning to Read the Forest

Our guide shows us footprints, fallen fruit, scratches on tree bark, feeding remains, animal trails and calls coming from high above us.

Every clue tells us something about the animals living nearby.

Several species of monkeys inhabit Manu, and walking beneath the canopy gives us opportunities to search for troops moving through the trees.

As temperatures begin to fall later in the afternoon, wildlife often becomes active again.

We walk slowly.

We stop frequently.

We listen.

Because in Manu, sometimes the most memorable wildlife encounter begins with a sound you cannot yet identify.

We eventually return to our lodge for another night deep inside the Manu Reserved Zone.

  • Accommodation: Reserved Zone Lodge
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 5: Manu River Wildlife Safari – Madre De Dios River – Blanquillo Area.

From the Manu Reserved Zone to Macaw Country

We begin another early morning inside the Manu Reserved Zone.

After breakfast, we board our boat and begin navigating downstream along the Manu River.

This journey gives us another important opportunity to observe wildlife.

Because we are traveling in the opposite direction, the light, beaches and viewing angles are different from our journey into the Reserved Zone.

Once again, we scan the riverbanks for monkeys, capybaras, caimans, turtles, macaws and tropical birds.

And once again, we remain alert for signs of jaguars.

After several days inside Manu, travelers often begin to notice something interesting.

They begin spotting wildlife themselves.

A movement in the canopy.

An unusual shape on a beach.

A bird call.

A ripple beside the boat.

You begin to see the rainforest differently.

We eventually leave the Manu River and continue our Amazon journey toward the Blanquillo area, internationally known for its remarkable birdlife and its famous macaw clay lick.

The surrounding rainforest offers further opportunities for wildlife observation and birdwatching.

Toucans, parrots, macaws, tanagers, woodpeckers and monkeys may be encountered as we travel through this rich Amazon ecosystem.

Later, we arrive at our accommodation and prepare for one of the most anticipated experiences of the entire expedition.

Tomorrow morning begins very early.

Our guide provides a briefing about the Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick, explaining the observation procedures and the importance of remaining quiet around the birds.

We recommend preparing cameras, binoculars and personal equipment before going to sleep.

  • Accommodation: Amazon Jungle Lodge
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 6: Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick – Boca Colorado – Cusco Or Puerto Maldonado.

The Macaw Spectacle of the Peruvian Amazon

Our final day begins before sunrise.

While the rainforest is still waking, we travel toward one of the great birdwatching highlights of our entire Amazon expedition:

Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick

From the designated observation area, we wait quietly as the first sounds of the rainforest begin around us.

The experience often develops gradually.

Smaller parrots and parakeets may begin gathering in nearby trees.

Their calls become increasingly intense.

Then the macaws begin arriving.

Pairs and groups of colorful macaws gather in the surrounding vegetation before approaching the natural clay wall.

When conditions are favorable, the forest can suddenly become filled with movement, color and sound as parrots, parakeets and macaws gather around the clay lick.

This natural behavior provides an extraordinary opportunity for Amazon birdwatching, wildlife photography and behavioral observation.

Our naturalist guide helps us identify species and explains what researchers understand about the importance of clay licks to Amazon parrots and macaws.

We take our time observing this extraordinary wildlife spectacle while respecting the animals and maintaining an appropriate distance.

After completing our Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick experience, we continue our journey downstream toward Boca Colorado.

From here, we begin the overland section of our return journey.

Depending on your travel arrangements, the expedition can conclude in Puerto Maldonado or Cusco.

Arrival times depend on river levels, weather, road conditions and the final destination.

After six remarkable days crossing the Andes, Cloud Forest, Manu Reserved Zone and lowland Amazon rainforest, our Manu Reserved Zone & Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick Amazon Adventure comes to an end.

But after spending this much time inside the rainforest, something usually changes.

You begin listening more carefully.

Looking longer.

And understanding that the Amazon reveals itself only to those willing to slow down and observe.

Important Information

The Manu Reserved Zone and Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick are located within a remote and highly dynamic Amazon environment. Weather, river levels, wildlife activity and trail conditions can change throughout the year. Jungle Trekkers Peru may adjust the exact timing, sequence or order of activities when necessary for safety, conservation, operational conditions or to improve wildlife observation opportunities.

The activity at the Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick is entirely natural. The number of macaws, parrots and parakeets present can vary according to weather, season and natural wildlife behavior.

Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. Jaguars, giant river otters, monkeys, caimans, macaws, parrots and all other animals encountered during our Manu Amazon wildlife expedition are completely wild and move freely through their natural habitat.

That unpredictability is not a limitation of the experience.

It is what makes Manu truly wild.
