Traveling by road and motorized boat, you will follow the natural transition from the mountains to the Amazon basin before entering the remote Manu Reserved Zone.
During this 5-day Manu Amazon wildlife tour, you will explore Cocha Salvador and Cocha Otorongo, navigate the Manu River, walk beneath enormous rainforest trees and search for giant river otters, different species of monkeys, caimans, capybaras, macaws, toucans and countless tropical birds. Early mornings, river journeys, guided rainforest walks and nighttime exploration allow you to experience the jungle at different moments of the day.

Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Paucartambo – Manu Cloud Forest
From the Andes to the Amazon
Our Manu Reserved Zone 5-day adventure begins early in the morning with pick-up from your accommodation in Cusco. Leaving the city behind, we travel through beautiful Andean valleys, traditional communities and spectacular mountain scenery toward the eastern slopes of the Andes.
Our first important stop is near the pre-Inca funerary towers of Ninamarca, where our guide will introduce us to some of the ancient cultures that inhabited this region before the expansion of the Inca Empire.
We continue toward the picturesque town of Paucartambo, known for its colonial architecture, narrow streets, traditional culture and historic bridge. This beautiful Andean town marks an important cultural and geographical transition on our journey toward the Amazon.
From Paucartambo, we climb toward Acjanaco, the gateway to Manu National Park and one of the highest points of our expedition.
From here, the landscape changes dramatically.
We begin descending along the eastern slopes of the Andes into the extraordinary Manu Cloud Forest. Orchids, bromeliads, moss-covered trees, giant ferns and waterfalls begin appearing around us as the dry Andean landscape gradually transforms into lush subtropical forest.
During the descent, we make strategic stops and short walks to search for wildlife. Colorful tanagers, hummingbirds, quetzals, toucans and other cloud forest birds may be observed along the way.
Before continuing our search for the famous Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, we will stop for lunch at a beautiful hummingbird garden surrounded by the lush vegetation of the Manu Cloud Forest.
Rather than simply stopping for a meal, this becomes another special wildlife experience during our journey into Manu.
While our professional cook prepares the table and serves a freshly made lunch, we will have time to relax and observe the garden around us. Different species of hummingbirds frequently visit the flowers and feeders, sometimes hovering remarkably close before disappearing back into the surrounding vegetation.
This is also an excellent opportunity for birdwatching and photography. With a little patience, we can appreciate the remarkable variety of colors, sizes and behaviors of these tiny birds while our naturalist guide helps us identify some of the species that inhabit this part of the Manu region.
Surrounded by the sounds of the forest, colorful flowers and hummingbirds flashing through the vegetation, lunch becomes much more than a meal. It is a peaceful moment to slow down, enjoy the scenery and experience the biodiversity of Manu from a completely different perspective.
Searching for the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock
After lunch, we continue descending deeper into the Cloud Forest toward one of the most anticipated wildlife experiences of our first day.
We visit an area known for the spectacular Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird and one of the most iconic species of the Manu Cloud Forest.
Depending on natural activity and conditions, we may observe the brilliantly colored males gathering and displaying among the vegetation. Their intense orange-red plumage contrasts beautifully against the deep green forest, making this one of the most memorable birdwatching and photography opportunities of the day.
But the Cock-of-the-Rock is not the only wildlife we are looking for. As we continue through the forest, our guide remains alert for monkeys, toucans, quetzals, tanagers and other species that inhabit this exceptionally biodiverse ecosystem.
As the afternoon progresses, we continue toward our lodge, surrounded by the sounds and vegetation of the forest.
After dinner, our naturalist guide will introduce the next stages of our expedition and explain the ecosystems and wildlife we may encounter as we travel deeper into the Peruvian Amazon.
- Accommodation: Cloud Forest / Foothill Jungle Lodge
- Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Day 2: Cloud Forest – Atalaya – Alto Madre De Dios River – Manu River – Reserved Zone
Entering the Wild Heart of Manu
We wake early surrounded by the sounds of the forest. After breakfast, we continue descending toward the tropical lowlands.
The vegetation becomes increasingly dense and tropical as we leave the mountains behind and approach the Amazon basin.
Eventually, we arrive at Atalaya Port, where our road journey ends and our river expedition begins.
We board our motorized boat and start navigating along the Alto Madre de Dios River. From this moment, the rivers become our highways through the Amazon.
During the journey, our naturalist guide continuously scans the riverbanks, beaches and treetops for wildlife. Depending on the season and natural activity, we may observe monkeys, parrots, macaws, kingfishers, herons, capybaras and many other species.
We eventually reach the area where we enter the Manu River and complete the required procedures before entering the protected Reserved Zone of Manu National Park.
This is where the expedition takes on a completely different character.
Human presence becomes increasingly limited, and immense stretches of pristine Amazon rainforest dominate both sides of the river.
We navigate slowly through this remarkable landscape, using the boat itself as a mobile wildlife observation platform.
White and black caimans may rest along the riverbanks, turtles can often be seen on fallen logs and sandy beaches, monkeys move through riverside trees and capybaras occasionally appear close to the water.
We also carefully scan the beaches and forest edges for one of Manu’s most elusive inhabitants: the jaguar.
Although sightings are never guaranteed, traveling along the Manu River gives us the possibility of encountering these magnificent cats along riverbanks or forest edges.
Later, we arrive at our lodge in the Reserved Zone.
After dinner, depending on weather conditions, we head out with our guide for an Amazon night walk.
After sunset, the rainforest becomes a completely different world. Frogs begin calling, insects emerge, spiders become active and countless nocturnal creatures reveal another side of the Amazon ecosystem.
- Accommodation: Reserved Zone Jungle Lodge
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Day 3: Cocha Salvador – Giant River Otters – Pristine Amazon Rainforest
Wildlife Day in the Heart of Manu
We wake early because the first hours of daylight are among the best moments for observing wildlife in the Amazon.
After breakfast, we travel toward one of the most important natural attractions of the Manu Reserved Zone:
Cocha Salvador
This beautiful oxbow lake was formed from an ancient bend of the river and today supports an extraordinary ecosystem surrounded by pristine rainforest.
We explore Cocha Salvador slowly and quietly from the appropriate observation platform or boat.
One of our main objectives is searching for the endangered giant river otter.
These highly social Amazon predators live in family groups and depend on healthy rivers and lakes for their survival.
Rather than rushing through the lake, we take our time.
We listen.
We watch the surface of the water.
We scan the surrounding vegetation.
Sometimes the first sign is a distant call. Other times, ripples appear across the water before an otter suddenly surfaces.
The lake is also home to an impressive variety of wildlife. We may encounter hoatzins, kingfishers, herons, cormorants, monkeys and caimans.
After exploring the lake, we continue with a guided walk through the surrounding Amazon rainforest.
This experience is about much more than simply identifying animals.
Our naturalist guide shows us how to read the forest.
Footprints in the mud, partially eaten fruits, scratches on tree bark, distant animal calls and sudden movements in the canopy can all reveal the presence of wildlife.
Along the trail, we may encounter different species of monkeys, colorful birds, insects and many other rainforest inhabitants.
We return for lunch and enjoy some time to rest during the hottest part of the day.
Later in the afternoon, we return to the forest for our Golden Hour Wildlife Walk.
As temperatures begin to drop, wildlife activity often increases again. We move quietly, stopping frequently to listen and observe the forest around us.
Depending on conditions, we may extend the experience into dusk, observing the fascinating transition between the daytime and nocturnal rainforest.
Afterwards, we return to our lodge for dinner and another night surrounded by the sounds of Manu.
- Accommodation: Reserved Zone Jungle Lodge
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Day 4: Cocha Otorongo – Wildlife Tracking – Manu River Safari.
Reading the Rainforest
Our fourth day begins early as we continue exploring the incredible biodiversity of the Manu Reserved Zone.
After breakfast, we travel toward another important oxbow lake:
Cocha Otorongo
Surrounded by primary rainforest, Cocha Otorongo provides another opportunity to experience the aquatic and forest ecosystems of Manu.
We explore the lake area and surrounding forest while searching for monkeys, tropical birds, caimans and other wildlife.
Today’s exploration introduces another dimension of Amazon wildlife observation: tracking animals through the signs they leave behind.
Our guide helps us recognize natural wildlife corridors and identify evidence of animals moving through the rainforest.
A fresh footprint in the mud, fruit partially eaten beneath a tree, scratches on bark, an alarm call from monkeys or movement high above us in the canopy can tell us what may have recently passed through the forest.
After our exploration, we board our boat and begin navigating downstream along the Manu River.
But this is much more than a transfer.
The journey becomes another river wildlife safari.
We travel slowly whenever conditions allow, scanning beaches, exposed riverbanks, fallen trees and the forest canopy.
Caimans, turtles, capybaras, monkeys and many species of birds may appear during our journey.
Once again, we carefully watch the riverbanks for the possibility of encountering a wild jaguar.
After several days in Manu, guests often begin recognizing wildlife and noticing movements in the forest themselves, making this return journey another important part of the experience.
Later in the afternoon, we arrive at our jungle lodge.
Depending on the location, weather and conditions, those who wish can join the guide for one final short night exploration.
This will be our final evening surrounded by the Amazon rainforest.
- Accommodation: Jungle Lodge
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Day 5: Amazon Rainforest – Atalaya – Cloud Forest – Cusco.
One Last Morning in the Amazon
Our final morning begins with the sounds of the rainforest.
Guests who wish can wake early for a short birdwatching session around the lodge before breakfast.
The first hours after sunrise are often particularly active for tropical birds, giving us one final opportunity to search for parrots, toucans, tanagers and other Amazon species.
After breakfast, we board our boat and begin navigating back toward Atalaya.
Even though we are returning toward civilization, our wildlife experience is not over.
We continue watching the riverbanks and forest canopy for monkeys, capybaras, caimans and tropical birds during our final Amazon river journey.
Upon reaching Atalaya, our transportation will be waiting for us.
We then begin climbing back through the different ecosystems we crossed during the first days of our expedition.
The tropical Amazon foothills gradually become cloud forest.
The cloud forest eventually gives way to the high Andes.
In just a few hours, we experience in reverse one of the most remarkable ecological transitions in Peru.
We make appropriate stops for meals, photographs and short breaks before continuing toward Cusco.
Arrival in Cusco is expected in the late afternoon or evening, depending on river, road and weather conditions.
After five unforgettable days traveling from the Andes into the Manu Reserved Zone, our Amazon wildlife expedition comes to an end.
- Meals: Breakfast & Lunch.
