6 Day Pacaya Samiria Amazon Camping Expedition

Deep Amazon Wildlife, Remote Camping & River Exploration in Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Go beyond a conventional Amazon tour and spend six days exploring one of the wildest protected landscapes in Peru on our 6 Day Pacaya Samiria Amazon Camping Expedition. Beginning in Iquitos and traveling through Nauta, this immersive journey takes us deep into Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, where rivers, lagoons, creeks and seasonally flooded forests create an extraordinary habitat for Amazon wildlife.

For six days and five nights, we travel progressively deeper into the reserve, camping surrounded by rainforest and exploring Shansho Cocha, the Yanayacu River, Veinte de Enero, Japon Creek, Yanta Lake and Yanaquillo Creek. Along the way, we search for pink river dolphins, monkeys, sloths, caimans, turtles, reptiles and tropical birds, discover medicinal and useful Amazon plants, navigate quiet waterways by canoe, explore rainforest trails and experience the jungle after darkness. Overview

Our 6 Day Pacaya Samiria Amazon Camping Expedition begins in Iquitos with an early journey to Nauta, one of the principal gateways to Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

From Nauta, we board our expedition boat and navigate through the immense river systems of Loreto, passing the region where the Marañón and Ucayali rivers come together to form the Amazon River.

We then continue toward Pacaya Samiria, complete the required entrance procedures and travel toward the Arequipa community area, where our first jungle camp is established.

During the following days, we progressively move deeper into the reserve.

Our journey takes us first toward Shansho Cocha, where calm dark waters and flooded forest create the spectacular reflections associated with Pacaya Samiria’s famous nickname: the Jungle of Mirrors.

From there, we continue toward the Yanayacu River and Veinte de Enero area, allowing us to explore rainforest trails, search for wildlife and discover the extraordinary diversity of Amazon plants.

What distinguishes this six-day expedition is the additional time dedicated to exploring the deeper environments around Veinte de Enero, Japon Creek and Yanta Lake.

Rather than immediately beginning our return journey, we spend another full day immersed in this remote landscape, exploring waterways and forest habitats while continuing our search for Amazon wildlife.

We later begin navigating back through Yanaquillo Creek, where monkeys, sloths, giant Amazon trees and tropical birds become the focus of our exploration.

Five nights of jungle camping keep us continuously connected with the rainforest.

We wake to birds and monkeys, eat our meals beside Amazon waterways and fall asleep surrounded by frogs, insects and distant wildlife.

Six days gives us the opportunity to slow down and explore Pacaya Samiria as an expedition rather than simply moving between attractions.

Itinerary

Day 1: Iquitos – Nauta – Pacaya Samiria National Reserve – First Jungle Camp.

From Iquitos to the Amazon

Our 6 Day Pacaya Samiria Amazon Camping Expedition begins early in the morning with pick-up from your accommodation in Iquitos.

After meeting your professional Amazon guide and expedition team, we travel overland toward Nauta, an important river town and one of the principal gateways to Pacaya Samiria.

Upon arrival, we enjoy breakfast and organize our expedition equipment before boarding our motorized boat.

From this moment onward, rivers become our roads.

Where Great Rivers Become the Amazon

Leaving Nauta behind, we begin navigating through one of the world’s most extraordinary river systems.

Along our route, we pass the region associated with the meeting of the Marañón and Ucayali rivers, whose waters form the Amazon River.

Our guide introduces us to the geography and ecology of this immense watershed while we begin searching for our first wildlife.

Herons, egrets, parrots, raptors and other tropical birds may appear along the riverbanks.

Entering Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

We continue upriver toward Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

After completing the required registration and entrance procedures, we continue toward the Arequipa community area, where our expedition team establishes our first camp.

Our tents are prepared while our cook organizes lunch.

From here onward, the rainforest becomes our home.

Searching for Pink River Dolphins

During our afternoon exploration, we begin searching for one of the most iconic inhabitants of the Amazon: the pink river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis).

These freshwater dolphins move freely throughout Amazon waterways and may appear unexpectedly during our navigation.

We slow down and observe quietly whenever dolphins are present.

Because they are completely wild animals, sightings can never be guaranteed.

Jungle Trekkers Peru does not chase, feed or force close interactions with dolphins.

Amazon Birds & Wildlife

Throughout the afternoon, our guide scans the forest canopy, riverbanks and open water for wildlife.

Depending on natural activity, we may encounter egrets, hawks, horned screamers, jacanas, parrots, parakeets, turtles, monkeys and other Amazon species.

Sunset & Responsible Caiman Search

As the sun disappears over the rainforest, we experience our first Amazon sunset.

After darkness, we head onto the waterways again for a responsible caiman observation excursion.

Our guide uses a flashlight to search for the reflection of caiman eyes on the water.

We observe these reptiles naturally without capturing, holding or unnecessarily disturbing them.

Afterward, we return to camp for dinner and our first night inside Pacaya Samiria.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Amazon Jungle Camping.

Day 2: Pacaya Samiria – Shansho Cocha – Jungle Of Mirrors.

Deeper into the Reserve

We wake early to the sounds of tropical birds, insects and distant wildlife.

After breakfast, we continue navigating deeper into Pacaya Samiria toward Shansho Cocha.

The journey itself is part of the experience.

As we travel, our guide continually watches the water, riverbanks and forest canopy for wildlife.

Amazon Wildlife Safari

Depending on natural activity, we may encounter primates, reptiles, turtles, tropical birds and pink river dolphins.

Wildlife can appear at any moment.

A group of monkeys may suddenly move through the canopy.

A turtle may surface beside the boat.

Macaws may cross overhead.

A pink dolphin may unexpectedly emerge from the water.

Nothing is staged.

Shansho Cocha & the Jungle of Mirrors

Eventually, we reach the Shansho Cocha area and establish our next jungle camp.

The calm, dark waters found within this landscape can produce extraordinary reflections.

When wind and current disappear, the sky, clouds and enormous surrounding trees may appear perfectly reflected across the water.

This remarkable effect is one of the reasons Pacaya Samiria is known as the Jungle of Mirrors.

Amazon Fishing

Later in the afternoon, conditions permitting, we try traditional recreational fishing.

Depending on location and season, the waterways may contain piranhas and other native Amazon fish.

Our guide explains how fish are connected to the seasonal flooding cycles that shape the reserve.

Amazon Night Walk

After dinner, we explore the rainforest after darkness.

With flashlights, we carefully search the vegetation and forest floor for tree frogs, lizards, spiders, snakes, insects and other nocturnal creatures.

The rainforest at night is not simply something to see.

It is something to hear.

Frogs, insects and distant animal calls create an extraordinary natural soundscape around us.

Eventually, we return to our tents for another night surrounded by wilderness.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Amazon Jungle Camping.

Day 3: Shansho Cocha – Yanayacu River – Veinte De Enero.

Journey Toward Yanayacu

After breakfast, we pack our expedition equipment and continue deeper into the reserve.

Today our route takes us through the Marañón River system toward the Yanayacu River and Veinte de Enero area.

As always, navigation doubles as wildlife exploration.

Our guide watches carefully for movement in the trees and water.

Wildlife in its Natural Habitat

The surrounding forest provides habitat for an extraordinary variety of wildlife.

Depending on the day’s natural activity, we may encounter monkeys, turtles, reptiles, butterflies, tropical birds and pink river dolphins.

Finding wildlife in dense rainforest requires patience.

Our local guides use animal calls, tracks, feeding signs, movement and knowledge of habitat to increase our chances of observation.

Rainforest Exploration

After reaching our camping area and enjoying lunch, we enter the forest on foot.

Walking through the rainforest provides an entirely different perspective from exploring by boat.

We begin noticing details that are easily missed from the river:

tracks in the mud, partially eaten fruits, vines climbing enormous trees and distant calls from animals hidden within the canopy.

Amazon Medicinal & Useful Plants

During our exploration, our guide introduces us to some of the remarkable plants associated with traditional Amazon knowledge.

Depending on the species encountered along our route, we may learn to identify plants such as cat’s claw (Uncaria tomentosa), Victoria amazonica, Mimosa pudica, Ceiba trees and other useful rainforest species.

We may also learn to recognize the ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) from an ethnobotanical perspective.

This is an educational experience.

Jungle Trekkers Peru does not present traditional plants as scientifically proven medical treatments and does not include ceremonies within this wildlife expedition.

Canoeing & Flexible Exploration

Depending on water levels, weather and wildlife activity, our afternoon may include canoeing, fishing, trekking or additional wildlife observation.

This flexibility is important.

Rather than forcing nature to fit a rigid timetable, we adapt our activities to current Amazon conditions.

Night Boat Excursion

After dinner, we return to the waterways for a night exploration.

Our guide searches the water and surrounding vegetation for nocturnal wildlife while we listen to the extraordinary sounds of the rainforest.

Eventually, we return to camp.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Amazon Jungle Camping.

Day 4: Veinte De Enero – Japon Creek – Yanta Lake – Deep Pacaya Samiria.

A Full Day Deeper Inside the Reserve

Today is what truly distinguishes our 6 Day Pacaya Samiria Amazon Camping Expedition from the shorter programs.

Instead of beginning our return journey, we dedicate another complete day to exploring the environments surrounding Veinte de Enero.

After breakfast, we set out for another expedition into the reserve.

Japon Creek

One of today’s destinations is Japon Creek, a quieter waterway surrounded by dense Amazon vegetation.

Exploring smaller creeks provides a completely different experience from navigating the larger rivers.

The forest closes around us.

Branches extend above the water.

Bird calls become easier to hear.

Our guide watches for movement among the trees while searching for monkeys, reptiles, turtles, tropical birds and other wildlife.

Yanta Lake

We also explore the Yanta Lake area, another aquatic environment within this remote Amazon landscape.

Lakes and calm waterways can provide valuable wildlife habitat, particularly during different stages of the seasonal flooding cycle.

We move slowly and quietly, allowing time to observe.

Pink river dolphins may occasionally appear in connected waterways, while birds, reptiles and monkeys can be active around the surrounding forest.

Deeper Wildlife Observation

Having an additional full day in this area increases our opportunity to simply wait and watch.

Wildlife observation is often about patience.

Rather than moving quickly from one place to another, we can stop when our guide hears monkey calls, notices unusual movement or finds fresh tracks and feeding signs.

Depending on natural activity, we continue searching for primates, sloths, reptiles, turtles, butterflies and tropical birds.

Medicinal Plants & Rainforest Ecology

Our exploration also continues the ethnobotanical learning begun the previous day.

Our guide points out additional plants and explains how flooded forest, lakes, palms and large trees create different microhabitats throughout Pacaya Samiria.

This gives us a deeper understanding of the reserve not simply as a collection of animals, but as an enormous interconnected ecosystem.

Another Night in the Deep Amazon

After lunch, we continue exploring according to conditions and wildlife activity.

As evening approaches, our expedition team prepares camp.

This will be another night far from Iquitos and conventional tourism.

When darkness arrives, we can simply listen.

The forest continues around us whether we are exploring or resting.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Amazon Jungle Camping.

Day 5: Pacaya Samiria – Yanaquillo Creek – Monkeys & Giant Amazon Trees.

Sunrise Birdwatching

We begin early and start navigating back through the reserve.

Morning is an excellent period for Amazon birdwatching, when cooler temperatures encourage many species to become active.

We search for cotingas, macaws, parrots, kingfishers, herons and other tropical birds.

Large raptors also inhabit the reserve, although encounters are naturally uncommon and never guaranteed.

Yanaquillo Creek

Our journey takes us toward Yanaquillo Creek, where quieter waterways provide another opportunity to explore flooded forest.

We navigate slowly and listen carefully for wildlife.

Searching for Amazon Primates

The forest surrounding Yanaquillo provides opportunities to search for different primates.

Depending on natural activity, we may encounter squirrel monkeys and saddle-back tamarins, among other monkey species.

Sometimes they move rapidly through the canopy in large groups.

At other times, we may hear them without ever seeing them.

Searching for Sloths

We also inspect the canopy for sloths, whose slow movement and natural camouflage make them surprisingly difficult to locate.

The experienced eyes of our local guide can make an enormous difference when searching for these quiet forest inhabitants.

Giants of the Amazon

During our exploration, we stop to appreciate some of the enormous trees characteristic of mature Amazon rainforest.

These may include Lupuna (Ceiba pentandra), Capirona and Capinuri, depending on the route.

Their enormous trunks and root systems demonstrate the extraordinary scale of Amazon forest.

Our guide explains their ecological importance and their relationship with the animals, plants and microorganisms around them.

Tropical Birds

Birdwatching continues throughout the day.

Depending on activity, we may encounter toucans, scarlet macaws, blue-and-yellow macaws, egrets and Amazon kingfishers.

After lunch, we continue exploring until the tropical light begins to fade.

Tonight is our fifth and final night camping inside Pacaya Samiria.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Amazon Jungle Camping.

Day 6: Yanaquillo Creek – Final Wildlife Exploration – Nauta – Iquitos.

One Last Morning in the Wild Amazon

Our final morning begins with the rainforest awakening around our camp.

After breakfast, we head out for one final Pacaya Samiria wildlife excursion.

Depending on our location, water levels and weather conditions, we explore by boat, canoe or on foot.

This gives us one more opportunity to search for pink river dolphins, monkeys, sloths, caimans, turtles, reptiles and tropical birds.

Nature Has the Final Word

There is no checklist that must be completed before leaving the reserve.

Every Pacaya Samiria expedition is different.

Some journeys reveal exceptional dolphin activity.

Others provide extraordinary monkey or bird encounters.

Sometimes an animal that remained hidden for five days appears during the final morning.

This uncertainty is part of exploring a truly wild environment.

Breaking Camp

We return to camp for lunch and begin dismantling our equipment.

Our expedition team carefully checks the camping area and collects all expedition materials and waste.

Our objective is simple:

leave as little evidence of our presence as possible.

Return Toward Nauta

We board our motorized boat and begin the journey back toward Nauta.

Wildlife observation continues during the return.

Our guide remains alert for caimans, turtles, herons, snakes, monkeys and river dolphins along the waterways and riverbanks.

Eventually, we leave the reserve behind and reach Nauta.

Return to Iquitos

From Nauta, our transportation takes us back toward Iquitos.

Depending on operating schedules and logistics, the return may include an educational conservation-related stop before continuing to your hotel or the airport.

After six days and five nights of camping, river navigation and wildlife exploration, our 6 Day Pacaya Samiria Amazon Camping Expedition comes to an end.

The journey may finish in Iquitos, but the experience of waking beneath the rainforest canopy, navigating silent creeks and watching wildlife in one of Peru’s great protected Amazon environments is much harder to leave behind.

IMPORTANT: THIS IS A REAL AMAZON CAMPING EXPEDITION

Our 6 Day Pacaya Samiria Amazon Camping Expedition is designed for travelers who want genuine immersion in the Peruvian Amazon.

This is not a luxury lodge tour.

For five nights, you will sleep in tents surrounded by tropical rainforest, experiencing the heat, humidity, insects, rain and natural sounds that are part of this environment.

Camping facilities are naturally more basic than a jungle lodge or hotel.

That simplicity is part of the expedition.

By camping, we can remain closer to the waterways and forest environments we explore rather than returning to developed accommodation every evening.

Our expedition team provides the necessary camping equipment and works to make the experience safe, organized and comfortable within the realities of a remote rainforest environment.

Six days also requires greater flexibility.

Rain can arrive unexpectedly.

Water levels can change.

Trails can become muddy.

Activities may take longer than anticipated.

Travelers who approach the expedition with flexibility and curiosity generally gain the most from the experience.
