Overview

Our 6 Day Manu Birding expedition is designed around one of the reasons Manu has become internationally famous among birdwatchers:

Extraordinary bird diversity across an enormous range of elevations.

Instead of remaining in a single ecosystem, we follow the eastern slopes of the Andes toward the Amazon, birding carefully at different elevations along the way.

Our journey begins at Huacarpay Wetlands, where Andean aquatic birds and endemic species provide our first targets.

From Huacarpay, we travel toward the entrance of Manu National Park and begin descending along the Manu Birding Road.

High-elevation birds gradually give way to cloud forest species.

Mixed-species flocks become increasingly important.

Tanagers, fruiteaters, antpittas, quetzals, toucanets, flycatchers and hummingbirds become our principal targets as we explore the montane forest.

One of the great highlights is an early-morning visit to a traditional Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek, where we search for Peru’s national bird during its spectacular natural courtship activity.

We then continue descending.

And the bird community changes again.

The lower Manu Road introduces us to warmer Amazonian habitats where macaws, manakins, antbirds, barbets, puffbirds and an increasingly diverse collection of hummingbirds begin appearing.

Eventually, our journey reaches the Amazon foothill rainforest, where we dedicate additional time to trails, bird gardens and canopy observation.

Here, completely different targets become possible, including cotingas, toucans, tinamous, woodcreepers, jacamars, antbirds and macaws.

Our final morning takes us to a Parrot Clay Lick, where parrots, parakeets and macaws may gather along a natural mineral-rich riverbank.

Six days give us time not simply to travel through Manu, but to bird Manu.

We stop when mixed flocks appear.

We investigate calls.

We watch flowering and fruiting trees.

We search different forest levels.

And we adjust our birding strategy according to elevation and current activity.

IMPORTANT – BIRD SIGHTINGS

The bird species mentioned throughout this itinerary represent target and potential species associated with the different habitats and elevations explored during our 6 Day Manu Birding expedition.

All birds are completely wild and specific species or numbers of species can never be guaranteed.

Bird activity varies according to elevation, season, weather, migration, flowering and fruiting cycles, food availability and natural behavior.

Our specialized birding guide may therefore adjust observation stops, departure times, walking routes and the amount of time spent at particular elevations according to current conditions and bird activity.

This flexibility is essential on a specialized Manu birdwatching tour.

An active mixed-species flock, flowering tree, fruiting tree or unexpected bird call may justify spending considerably more time at one location than originally planned.

The same principle applies to the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek and Parrot Clay Lick. Activity at both locations is entirely natural and can vary from day to day.

Every species listed below should therefore be understood as a birding target rather than a guaranteed sighting.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Huacarpay Wetlands – High Andes – Upper Manu Road.

Endemic Birds and the Beginning of Our Manu Birding Adventure

Our 6 Day Manu Birding expedition begins early in the morning with pick-up from your accommodation in Cusco.

Our first destination is Huacarpay Wetlands, an important Andean birding environment located southeast of Cusco.

The combination of open water, reedbeds, dry slopes and surrounding vegetation provides habitat for both aquatic birds and regional specialties.

One of our most important targets is:

Bearded Mountaineer

The Bearded Mountaineer is endemic to Peru and is one of the most sought-after hummingbirds around Cusco.

We carefully explore suitable flowering vegetation while also searching the wetlands and surrounding slopes for additional species.

BIRDING HIGHLIGHTS & TARGET SPECIES

Potential targets include:

  • Bearded Mountaineer
  • Rusty-fronted Canastero
  • Creamy-crested Spinetail
  • Plumbeous Rail
  • Cinnamon Teal
  • Puna Teal
  • Yellow-billed Pintail
  • White-tufted Grebe
  • Cinereous Harrier
  • Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle
  • Streak-fronted Thornbird
  • Many-colored Rush Tyrant

After our morning birding session and breakfast, we continue toward Manu.

We cross increasingly remote Andean landscapes until reaching approximately the highest elevation of our journey near the entrance to Manu National Park.

From here, we begin descending toward the Cloud Forest.

The change in habitat means a change in birds.

We make strategic stops for tanagers, hummingbirds, antpittas, tyrannulets, flycatchers, toucans and toucanets.

By afternoon, we arrive at our accommodation surrounded by upper montane forest.

OPTIONAL NOCTURNAL BIRDING

After dark, we may conduct our first nocturnal search.

One particularly interesting target in this elevational zone is the:

  • Swallow-tailed Nightjar

As always, nocturnal sightings depend completely on natural activity and conditions.

  • Accommodation: Upper Montane Forest Lodge
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 2: Upper Manu Road – Montane Forest – Manu Cloud Forest.

Tanagers, Quetzals, Antpittas and Mixed-Species Flocks

We begin early.

Today we descend through one of the richest birding sections of the Manu Cloud Forest.

The strategy is simple:

Travel slowly.

Listen constantly.

And stop whenever bird activity increases.

Mixed-species flocks can contain numerous birds moving together through several levels of the forest.

When we find one, we take our time.

BIRDING HIGHLIGHTS & TARGET SPECIES

Important potential targets include:

  • Golden-collared Tanager
  • Grass-green Tanager
  • Hooded Mountain Tanager
  • Buff-breasted Mountain Tanager
  • Yellow-throated Tanager
  • Slaty Tanager
  • Scaled Metaltail
  • Mountain Cacique
  • White-collared Jay
  • Barred Parakeet
  • Barred Fruiteater
  • Band-tailed Fruiteater
  • Marcapata Spinetail
  • Red-and-white Antpitta
  • White-throated Antpitta
  • Blue-banded Toucanet
  • Slaty-backed Chat-Tyrant
  • Fulvous Wren
  • Chestnut-crested Cotinga
  • Crested Quetzal
  • Golden-headed Quetzal
  • Black-streaked Puffbird
  • Superciliaried Hemispingus

We also keep watch above the forest for raptors.

Potential targets may include:

  • Black-and-chestnut Eagle
  • Solitary Eagle

Quetzals and fruiteaters often require careful scanning of fruiting trees, while antpittas can be considerably more challenging.

Sometimes we hear them.

Sometimes we glimpse movement in the understory.

And sometimes they remain completely hidden.

That is part of birding the Cloud Forest.

EVENING BIRDING

As daylight fades, our birding strategy changes.

One of our potential nocturnal targets is:

  • Rufous-bellied Nighthawk

After completing our evening observations, we return to the lodge for dinner.

  • Accommodation: Manu Cloud Forest Lodge
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 3: Andean Cock-of-the-rock Lek – Cloud Forest Trails – Hummingbird Garden.

A Full Day with the Birds of the Manu Cloud Forest

We begin before sunrise.

Our first objective is one of Peru’s most iconic birds.

ANDEAN COCK-OF-THE-ROCK

We visit a traditional lek used by male Andean Cock-of-the-Rocks.

As the forest begins to brighten, males may gather among the vegetation to call and display.

Their brilliant orange-red plumage, unusual shape and remarkable courtship behavior make this one of the great birding experiences of Manu.

After observing the lek, we continue searching the surrounding habitat.

COCK-OF-THE-ROCK FOREST TARGETS

Potential species include:

  • Andean Cock-of-the-Rock
  • White-crowned Tapaculo
  • Yungas Manakin
  • Crested Quetzal
  • Versicolored Barbet
  • Orange-eared Tanager
  • Highland Motmot

After breakfast, we explore forest trails where another group of birds becomes possible.

CLOUD FOREST TRAIL TARGETS

We search for:

  • Slaty Gnateater
  • Chestnut-breasted Wren
  • Cinnamon-faced Tyrannulet
  • Spotted Nightingale-Thrush
  • Amazonian Umbrellabird
  • Tyrannine Woodcreeper
  • Masked Trogon
  • Crimson-bellied Woodpecker
  • Black-streaked Puffbird
  • Paradise Tanager
  • Saffron-crowned Tanager
  • Golden Tanager
  • Brown Tinamou

Monkeys and other wildlife may also be encountered during our forest walks.

HUMMINGBIRDS OF THE MANU CLOUD FOREST

Later, we spend time around flowering vegetation and hummingbird feeders.

This gives us the opportunity to observe one of Manu’s most fascinating bird families at close range.

Potential hummingbird targets include:

  • Booted Racket-tail
  • Wire-crested Thorntail
  • Green Hermit
  • Buff-tailed Sicklebill
  • Many-spotted Hummingbird
  • Violet-fronted Brilliant
  • White-bellied Woodstar
  • Peruvian Piedtail
  • Long-tailed Sylph
  • Wedge-billed Hummingbird
  • Speckled Hummingbird
  • Fawn-breasted Brilliant
  • Sparkling Violetear

For bird photographers, this can be one of the most rewarding sessions of the entire expedition.

NOCTURNAL TARGETS

Later in the day, depending on conditions, we search for:

  • Lyre-tailed Nightjar
  • Rufescent Screech-Owl

After a full day dedicated almost entirely to birding, we return to our lodge.

  • Accommodation: Manu Cloud Forest Lodge
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 4: Lower Manu Road – Atalaya – Amazon Foothills

From Cloud Forest Birds to Amazonian Species

After breakfast, we continue descending toward lower elevations.

The change is increasingly obvious.

The forest becomes warmer.

The vegetation becomes more tropical.

And the bird community changes dramatically.

LOWER MANU ROAD TARGET SPECIES

During our descent, we search for:

  • Ornate Flycatcher
  • Lanceolated Monklet
  • Peruvian Piedtail
  • Black-backed Tody-Flycatcher
  • Black-faced Tanager
  • Blue-headed Macaw
  • Chestnut-fronted Macaw
  • Fiery-capped Manakin
  • White-eyed Parakeet
  • Chestnut-backed Antshrike
  • Golden Tanager
  • Orange-eared Tanager
  • Solitary Eagle

Eventually, we reach Atalaya, where we exchange our road transportation for a motorized boat.

A short river journey takes us deeper into the Amazon foothill environment.

AMAZON FOOTHILL HUMMINGBIRDS

Around productive flowering areas, a new hummingbird community becomes possible.

Potential targets include:

  • Rufous-crested Coquette
  • Violet-headed Hummingbird
  • Golden-tailed Sapphire
  • Koepcke’s Hermit
  • Amethyst Woodstar
  • Rufous-webbed Brilliant
  • Gould’s Jewelfront

This is an excellent example of why elevation is so important in Manu.

Many of these species were absent from the higher Cloud Forest we explored only a day earlier.

AMAZON RAINFOREST TRAIL TARGETS

Along nearby trails, we search for:

  • Amazonian Antpitta
  • Blue-headed Macaw
  • Great Tinamou
  • Spot-backed Antbird
  • Hoatzin
  • Sungrebe
  • Chestnut-capped Puffbird

NIGHT BIRDING

After dinner, we enter the forest again.

Potential nocturnal targets include:

  • Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl
  • Long-tailed Potoo
  • Black-banded Owl
  • Great Potoo
  • Band-bellied Owl

Nocturnal birding requires patience and careful listening.

Often the first indication that a bird is nearby is a call coming from somewhere inside the darkness.

  • Accommodation: Amazon Foothill Lodge
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 5: Amazon Foothill Rainforest – Canopy Birding – Forest Trails

Cotingas, Manakins, Barbets, Antbirds and Amazon Forest Specialists

Today we dedicate the entire day to Amazon foothill birding.

There is no need to cover large distances.

Instead, we explore several forest levels and habitats around our accommodation.

CANOPY BIRDING

One of our principal activities is observing the upper levels of the rainforest from a strategic observation area.

The canopy supports species that can be extremely difficult to observe from ground level.

We scan exposed branches, fruiting trees and the sky above the forest.

Potential canopy targets include:

  • Plum-throated Cotinga
  • Spangled Cotinga
  • Opal-rumped Tanager
  • Turquoise Tanager
  • Round-tailed Manakin
  • Striolated Puffbird
  • Military Macaw
  • Double-toothed Kite

With patience, canopy birding can produce some of the most colorful birds of the expedition.

FOREST TRAIL BIRDING

We then turn our attention toward the understory and interior forest.

Here, the birding becomes very different.

Some species remain hidden among dense vegetation.

Others walk quietly across the forest floor.

Woodcreepers climb trunks.

Antbirds move through the understory.

Jacamars watch from exposed perches.

Potential targets include:

  • Half-collared Gnatwren
  • Tawny-throated Leaftosser
  • Razor-billed Curassow
  • Scarlet-hooded Barbet
  • Lemon-throated Barbet
  • Buff-throated Woodcreeper
  • Red-billed Tyrannulet
  • Fine-barred Piculet
  • Undulated Tinamou
  • Rufous-breasted Piculet
  • Plain-brown Woodcreeper
  • Blue-crowned Trogon
  • Red-throated Caracara
  • Chestnut-fronted Macaw
  • Black-capped Tinamou
  • Cinereous Tinamou
  • Bluish-fronted Jacamar
  • Pygmy Antwren
  • Goeldi’s Antbird

Today’s combination of canopy and understory birding demonstrates another fascinating characteristic of Amazon bird diversity:

Different species occupy different vertical levels of exactly the same forest.

A birdwatcher who only watches the canopy misses the understory.

And a birder who only walks forest trails may never see some of the canopy specialists.

By exploring both, we give ourselves a much broader opportunity to understand—and hopefully observe—the remarkable bird community of the Amazon foothills.

By late afternoon, we return to our lodge for our final night in the rainforest.

  • Accommodation: Amazon Foothill Lodge
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 6: Parrot Clay Lick – Amazon River – Atalaya – Manu Road – Cusco.

One Final Amazon Birding Experience

Our final morning begins early.

Before leaving the Amazon foothills, we visit a natural Parrot Clay Lick located along the river.

Clay licks are fascinating gathering places where parrots, parakeets and macaws may descend to mineral-rich soil.

We arrive quietly and position ourselves for observation.

The activity often begins gradually.

Calls appear in the distance.

Small groups begin gathering in surrounding trees.

More birds may arrive.

And when conditions feel safe, some descend toward the clay.

PARROT CLAY LICK TARGET SPECIES

Potential visitors may include:

  • Parakeets
  • Amazon Parrots
  • Blue-headed Parrot
  • Chestnut-fronted Macaw
  • Blue-headed Macaw

The combination of color, sound and social behavior makes the clay lick a memorable final birding experience.

However, activity is entirely natural.

Weather, predators and other environmental factors can influence whether birds approach the clay.

After completing our observation, we begin our return journey.

We navigate upstream toward Atalaya, where our private transportation will be waiting.

From here, we begin climbing back along the Manu Road toward Cusco.

ONE LAST CHANCE FOR TARGET SPECIES

The return journey provides one final birding opportunity.

We have already explored these elevations during our descent.

Now we know what we missed.

If time, weather and road conditions permit, our specialized birding guide may make strategic stops for important target species that escaped us earlier in the expedition.

Perhaps we heard a quetzal but never saw it.

Perhaps a mixed flock appeared too quickly.

Perhaps one particular tanager or hummingbird never showed itself.

Birding often rewards a second opportunity.

Eventually, we leave the Cloud Forest behind and cross the Andes toward Cusco.

Arrival is expected in the evening, depending on birding activity, weather and road conditions.

After six days, our 6 Day Manu Birding expedition comes to an end.

We began with endemic birds in the high Andes.

We followed mixed flocks through the Cloud Forest.

We searched for quetzals, toucanets and antpittas.

We watched the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock display.

We photographed hummingbirds at close range.

We descended into the Amazon foothills.

We searched the canopy for cotingas.

We walked rainforest trails for antbirds, tinamous and woodcreepers.

And finally, we watched the riverbank for parrots and macaws gathering at a natural clay lick.

That extraordinary transition—from Andean wetlands to Amazon rainforest—is what makes birdwatching in Manu one of Peru’s great birding experiences.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The Manu Birding Road crosses an extraordinary range of elevations and ecosystems between the high Andes and Amazon foothills. Weather can change rapidly, particularly within the Manu Cloud Forest, where rain, mist, sunshine and temperature changes can occur during the same day.

These changing conditions are directly connected to the extraordinary bird diversity found along the route.

Elevation, season, weather, flowering and fruiting cycles, food availability and natural movements influence which species are active at any particular location.

For this reason, our birding itinerary is intentionally flexible.

Jungle Trekkers Peru may adjust departure times, birding stops, observation locations, trails or the sequence of activities when our specialized birding guide believes doing so may improve birdwatching opportunities or when weather, road or safety conditions require changes.

All birds listed throughout the itinerary are target and potential species only.

The Bearded Mountaineer, Creamy-crested Spinetail, Marcapata Spinetail, Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Golden-headed Quetzal, Crested Quetzal, Blue-banded Toucanet, Peruvian Piedtail, Blue-headed Macaw, Koepcke’s Hermit, cotingas, antpittas, tanagers, hummingbirds, owls, potoos and every other species mentioned are completely wild.

No individual bird species or total number of species can ever be guaranteed.

The same applies to the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek and Parrot Clay Lick. These are natural wildlife environments, not controlled attractions.

Some days may produce extraordinary mixed-species flocks.

On other days, a single target bird may require considerable patience.

And sometimes Manu produces a completely unexpected species that becomes the highlight of the entire expedition.

That uncertainty is not a limitation of birding Manu.

It is one of the reasons birdwatchers return.
